Green Self is the first painting I ever completed, created at a moment when I was only beginning to discover the possibilities of the brush, paint, and canvas. At the time, I was going through a difficult period with my mental health, and painting unexpectedly became a therapeutic process that helped me work through what I was experiencing and begin to heal. Green has always been the color I like the least, which made it strangely appropriate for this first self-portrait: I used a color I resisted to represent a part of myself I was also struggling to understand. Yet green is simultaneously one of the colors most closely associated with nature, growth, and life. That contradiction became important to me, and I began to see the color as representing the madness that blooms in nature—something wild and unpredictable, but also capable of producing growth and beauty. The direct gaze of the figure captures me at the beginning of this discovery, before I knew where painting would eventually take me. Green Self represents the moment painting stopped being simply something I was trying and became a way of understanding and healing myself.

My work is born from the intersection of nature, science, history, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and sacred geometry. I am fascinated by the patterns, symbols, and invisible connections that exist between living beings. Through abstraction and symbolism, I seek to create paintings that invite the viewer to pause, question what they observe, and discover their own interpretations.

Paper prints are printed in Canada on substantial 14 pt premium matte paper with an elegant, glare-free matte finish. Each Cereal Art print is made to order and individually signed by artist David Rios. Paper prints are carefully rolled for shipping unless you select the framing option.
