Yellow Self came immediately after I finished my first painting and began wondering whether there might actually be an artistic ability in me that I had never discovered. The painting did not look particularly promising when I started it, but instead of abandoning it, I allowed myself to continue experimenting and see where the process would lead. Like the other works in the Self series, the figure is a self-portrait, but this one emerged almost as a feminine facet of myself—perhaps carrying something of my mother as well. Rather than trying to reproduce my physical appearance exactly, I was beginning to discover that a self-portrait could represent something internal: different qualities, influences, memories, and versions of myself could appear through the same face. Yellow is my favorite color, and here its brightness gives this version of me a sense of warmth, curiosity, possibility, and discovery. Looking back, the uncertainty I felt while making the painting became part of its meaning: I was learning that creativity does not always begin with knowing what you are doing; sometimes you discover what you are capable of simply by continuing. Yellow Self represents curiosity, possibility, and the emerging side of myself that was beginning to believe I might actually be an artist.

My work is born from the intersection of nature, science, history, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and sacred geometry. I am fascinated by the patterns, symbols, and invisible connections that exist between living beings. Through abstraction and symbolism, I seek to create paintings that invite the viewer to pause, question what they observe, and discover their own interpretations.

Paper prints are printed in Canada on substantial 14 pt premium matte paper with an elegant, glare-free matte finish. Each Cereal Art print is made to order and individually signed by artist David Rios. Paper prints are carefully rolled for shipping unless you select the framing option.
